Angela launched her professional career in 2008 when she accepted the position of concertmaster for the Timmins Symphony Orchestra. Alongside her duties with the TSO, she tours the North as a regular first violinist with the North Bay and Sudbury Symphony Orchestra's. Her playing doesn't stop at orchestral music however. Angela has been the featured soloist with the TSO three times - 2011 Bruch Violin Concerto, 2015 DeBeriot's Scene de Ballet, and 2017 Mozart Duo Concertante. She is also a major contributor to the ever-evolving chamber music scene in Timmins, previously of the XStrata Copper Quartet and currently as a member of the TSO Chamber Ensemble. The unique musical landscape of Timmins presents many challenges and Angela is very pleased to have had opportunities to perform some major repertoire alongside very skilled colleagues. From time to time, Angela will step outside her comfort zone to fiddle, play pop music and even jazz with pianist Steve Kessler.
Angela’s passion for the violin began modestly, learning in a school group string program in her hometown of Saint John, NB. After only a few years, she was playing in all sorts of ensembles and discovering her love of teaching with her first violin students. With the encouragement of her teacher, Robert McCausland, she went on to obtain her Bachelor of Music from Memorial University's School of Music. There she studied with Dr. Nancy Dahn, of the world renowned Duo Concertante, and even attended a masterclass with Pinchas Zuckerman.
Over the years, Angela has held many orchestral positions starting with concertmaster of the Senior Orchestra in high school, first violin with the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra and Symphony New Brunswick. She was a member of the Atlantic Sinfonia, Fredericton Chamber Orchestra and the York Early Music Ensemble. In Newfoundland, she gained a great deal of experience as concertmaster of the NSYO, first violinist with the NSO and NSO Sinfonia, the MUN Chamber Orchestra, various trios, quartets and quintets, pit orchestras and so on.
It is that passion for ensemble playing and her desire to teach that inspired Angela to form the TSO’s Youth Orchestra (formerly the Junior Orchestra). Since 2008, the group has performed regularly at the music school’s bi-annual concerts and later, the Porcupine Music Festival and continues to grow. It is a wonderful way for violin students to be introduced to ensemble playing, make friends and learn from each other.
Angela is excited to be performing on a commissioned 2013 Daryl Griffith violin.
